Sandra Bullock VS. Julia Child

by Dr. Janet Johnson on February 2, 2010

Everyone is abuzz this morning about the Oscar nominations, especially the best actress nods. Sandra Bullock is vying for her first Oscar and she probably will win. I of course, am rooting for Meryl Streep who played a dead-on Julia Child. When I forget who is playing Julia Child and believe that IS Julia, that’s when I think of Oscar.

Sandra’s Bullock’s performance was good. But, I just saw Sandra in blonde hair, which looked unnatural with her coloring, and a southern accent. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED the movie The Blind Side. This movie one is one of my three favorites I’ve seen in a very long time. In fact, The Blind Side, Julie/Julia, and It’s Complicated are my three favorite movies for the year. Two of those movies included Meryle Streep, whose career is booming.

Sandra’s performance for some odd reason reminds me of Julia Roberts’s performance when she played that feisty lawyer’s assistant who brought down Pacific Gas & Electric in Erin Brockovich. Julia played a smart mouthed, no holds barred woman. Julia’s character’s qualities is reminiscent of Sandra’s portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy. In fact, Erin and Leigh Anne have many similar character traits. It would have been a toss up between Julia and Sandra to play Leigh Anne.

I am sure Sandra will win–and  Meryl’s Julia will be just a nice nod from the Academy. I just think Meryl’s Julia is what acting is all about–making the audience believe they ARE watching Julia. I was transferred into Julia’s life and that my movie-going friends is an Oscar performance. I like both Sandra and Meryl. I love watching them and hope it’s a tie.
