The Texas Hill Country

by Dr. Janet Johnson on August 7, 2010

This past week I travelled to the Texas Hill Country to see a good friend from college (the first go around). Glenda and I had a fabulous time going to all the wineries around the hill country. We went to Driftwood vineyard, Woodrose winery, Grape Creek vineyards,Becker Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars, Torre di Pietra, Sister Creek Vineyards, and Duchman Family Winery. All the wine was fabulous–some more fabulous than others. I have to admit, before tasting all this wine, I was not much of a wine connoisseur. I am still not–but I have found reds I like–who knew a good Cabernet was my thing–and sweet wines I LOVED! I also found a Viognier that I really liked by Becker Vineyards.  If you live in Texas and like wine–this is the place to go to experience a Texas you have never experienced. The people are fun, nice and happy to see you. Here are some pictures I took while in the hill country.

Thanks! I try. I still need to work with exposure. It’s all about practice at this point.

Janet, I want to take time to comment on some of these individually, but just have a minute now. These look great! Looks like you had a really good time and captured some great colors and unique scenes. Yes, I am taking the intermediate course now. In some ways it’s better than beginning…more room for creativity, moving more quickly through the material…but in other ways it’s worse. :) I was “bored out of my gourd” for the lecture on studio lighting (not interested) and nature (which I thought I would enjoy…but it was about serious hiking to shoot deer, etc….not something I’ll ever do). I’m glad it’s almost over. We had a GREAT video one night on exposure. It was very helpful and in plain English. :) Like you, I just need to practice. Will enjoy shooting more when I don’t have a specific assignment or deadline…although I can tell I learn something from each assignment. Glad to see you posting again. I had been checking, but you’ve been busy with other things. :)

@Theresa, Thanks! I try my best to be as creative as possible. I am practicing noticing colors, patterns, and developing a story with each photo.

@Barb–Collin County looks like they have great classes. I might take a class next summer from them. I can’t believe you took the intermediate class. I refuse to take that instructor again. I just can’t handle his teaching style when other people who I know have had such fun in their photography classes and were encouraged to bring their cameras so they could roam around and take pictures during class time with instructor’s help. So sad that it’s not as creative and as informative as I had liked. If I knew we were only going to be read to, I would have just picked up the book and saved my money. You’re a brave woman :-) Now that I know some basics, I am trying to practice, but haven’t picked up my camera until last week. I have been really tired after graduation and Summer I classes.

I’m glad you are getting something out of your second class. I am going to check the Collin County schedule and try to sign up for their photo class, it just sounds interesting and Collin County has a building JUST for continuing education with a photo studio type class room. And, hopefully better instructors. Ugh! I hope you never have to hike to “shoot” deer! LOL!

Good to know about Collin County. Thanks for that info. I may be checking into that next summer also.
