Yoga: The 2-week experiment for a stressed out Ph.D candidate

by Janet Johnson on February 3, 2010

I’ve always dabbled with yoga. I have my videos and have taken classes, but I have never done it everyday. I want to see if I see a change in my body and my overall-well-being. The problem I am having recently is lack of motivation. This summer, I lost 4 inches and have since found those missing 4 inches. I need some motivation to get back to my healthy eating and exercising ways. Will yoga help me get back into a routine? I want to feel motivated to go back to my circuit training. So far, I’ve started exercising for a couple of days and then stopped. I get on a roll, but something always gets in the way to make time for a rigorous workout–which I like doing and have seen results. Why not JUST do it… well, I’m the person who needs to slowly get into the “groove” again. But, I’ve done yoga but haven’t done it long enough to see results. I really just want to do yoga for 2 weeks to see how I really feel after the two weeks are up… I’m sure I will feel great! I just need that time to figure out if yoga is for me. I really want to see how relaxed and focused I may become after 2 full weeks of practicing yoga. Getting started is the hardest part.

I started last week on the treadmill, but again, lack of motivation and schedules got in the way. There’s always something else to do. But, if I knew I could easily do a yoga workout that required no special equipment, comfy clothes and no shoes, I might be more inclined to do this every day for 2 weeks. Then, I would sit another 2 week goal doing another type of exercise, such as my goal, circuit training. Running on the treadmill and lifting weights–my favorite!

So, my goal is to do yoga for 2-weeks to see what happens. So far the benefits that I might see are excellent. I just want to get control of my snacking, and lack of motivation for exercise. I miss exercise and it’s just a matter of getting up and doing SOMETHING. I hope this works and I hope I stick with it! I feel as if the PhD is pulling me down and sucking the life out of me. I need to find myself again.

I know I’m not going to lose weight or see those 4 inches lost again in 2 weeks… but I might see my motivation creeping back in and I might see a want to exercise more. The goal is to move and to learn to relax and that is what I am in desperate need of during my dissertation revisions!

Yay! I can post a comment!!! Now I have to follow you!!

I have been also having a hard time finding time and staying motivated, but yoga is something that helps me stay calm and focused as well as being good exercise. I have basically decided just to do a variety of yoga workouts and when the weather gets nicer, I will walk for some cardio.

I did a 30 minute walk today and did a 30 min yoga video this evening. I feel so relaxed.

I REALLY should have done something. I was going to. But got sucked into chatting on fb and gmail chat bc I had gotten so annoyed at that mom. Then the girls came home and there were all kinds of homework and Piper had writing club. then jason got home and we were talking, had a beer, had to make dinner…

There is no excuse not to do it now except that I want to read. lol

Do you follow dooce? or the $1000 a month lady? we are all addicted to both of those at work.

No, but I’ll check them out. I’m looking at new themes for my blog.

dooce is really interesting. i HIGHLY recommend it especially from the media pov. she started the blog, got fired from her job bc of it…blogged through her dating days, dating her husband, her wedding, having her first kid, post partum…she was raised morman…and now both she and her husband live off of her blog!!!!

the $1000 a month chick, emily, is also very interesting.

the girls at work follow a lot of blogs. these are the only two that i habitually follow.

Very cool. I have my students creating blogs this semester. I have one student who is doing an awesome job. I need to make a blog roll on my class blogs so you can see them progress.
